Microsoft E3 2016 Press Conference Highlights

Microsoft opened this Monday with their big E3 press conference and they had quite a few big announcements and gameplay demos to show off.  I’ll once again be trimming out the brief lowlights of the conference in favor of just giving you the meat and potatoes of what we gamers love.  So without further ado, let’s get started!

1. Forza Horizon 3 is heading to the Outback!

Playground Games’ third entry into the Forza Horizon series was showcased heavily at the conference, as they revealed that the game will take the Horizon festival to Australia.  Naturally, this new aesthetic has added many new types of vehicles, including off-road buggies, to the game to compensate for the new landscape.  Horizon 3 will feature four player co-op across Xbox One and PC, and it will launch simultaneously on both platforms on September 27th.

2. Playdead Studio’s new game Inside is still kicking, and coming to Xbox later this month.

Inside was showcased at last year’s E3, and has been radio silent ever since.  Today, Playdead reintroduced the game and revealed that it is very much alive and practically done.  The game will be coming first to Xbox One on June 29, and PC on July 7th.

3. Two new Zombie games announced: State of Decay 2 and Dead Rising 4

Microsoft had two brand new zombie games to show off this year, with the announcements of both State of Decay 2 and Dead Rising 4.  State of Decay 2 was revealed with a partially cinematic and partially gameplay trailer that revealed it will come out in 2017.  Dead Rising 4 was revealed with a primarily gameplay trailer showcasing Frank West’s return to the lead role.  The game will take place at Christmas time, and probably not coincidentally, Dead Rising 4 is coming Holiday 2016.

4. Scalebound shows off 4 player co-op battles reminiscent of Monster Hunter

Platinum Games returned to E3 to show off Scalebound and it’s foru player co-op mode.  The gameplay featured the biggest boss battle that Platinum has ever created, with the players swapping between ground and dragon combat to fight the massive crab creature.  The gameplay wasn’t the quick action that Platinum is known for in games like Bayonetta, but appears more methodical like games like Monster Hunter.  Scalebound is due out on Xbox One and PC in 2017.

5. Halo Wars 2 gets delayed, but cools the sting with an Open Beta available right now

343 Industries’ Dan Ayoub took the stage to announce that Halo Wars 2 is being developed by both 343 and Creative Assembly (devs of Total War series), and will launch on February 21st of 2017, a delay from there initial Fall 2016 release window.  To cool the sting of the delay, 343 announced an open beta which is available right now on Xbox One.  The whole game will launch on both Xbox One and PC and it, along with all Microsoft Studios games revealed at the conference include cross-buy when bought digitally for play on both Xbox One and PC.

6. Gears of War 4 reveals a new co-op demo, special edition controller, and General RAAM in Killer Instinct

Rod Fergusson of the Coalition  brought out the big guns with an extended gameplay demo of the upcoming Gears of War 4.  The demo showed off the new swarm enemies and dazzling weather effects, including crazy lightning strikes, and a new weapon called the Buzzkill which shoot saw blades at enemies that can ricochet off walls.  The Coalition also showed off a limited edition Gears of War elite controller for Xbox One, and Iron Galaxy revealed that General RAAM, the antagonist of the first Gears, is available now for Killer Instinct.  Gears of War 4 launches on October 11th.

7. Sea of Thieves wows with insanely fun looking co-op.

Rare revealed the first gameplay for Sea of Thieves and it looks immensely fun.  The team at Rare invited community members in and split them into three teams to play the game.  They were given no tutorial, no instructions, and simply told to play.  What follows is an amazingly fun looking gameplay demonstration.  No release date or window was announced, but Rare did reveal they want to get fan feedback on the game as early as possible, so expect some sort of early access or alpha for the game.

8. Project Scorpio is real, and it is “the most powerful console ever made”, and Microsoft reveals a slimmer Xbox One, called Xbox One S

There have been rumors for months that Microsoft is building an Xbox 1.5 of sorts, that is more powerful than the Xbox One while not a new generation of consoles.  It is code-named Project Scorpio, and was confirmed to be real by Microsoft today.  It features of six teraflops of computing power, and the most powerful graphics processor in a console to date.  Microsoft also revealed the Xbox One S, a slim version of the current Xbox One console, that will feature 4K resolution and full HDR output (as will Scorpio).  Everything that works on Xbox One will work on Scorpio and One S, and likewise for anything that works on Scorpio will work on Xbox One.  “No one gets left behind,” Phil Spencer declared.  The Scorpio will launch in Fall 2017, and the Xbox One S this August.

And those are the big highlights from the Xbox One press conference, and I even left out a trailer for the upcoming game ReCore, which looks phenomenal.  The press conference was, in my opinion, the best Microsoft has put on in years.  What were your highlights?  Let me know in the comments!

Forza Horizon 2 announced for Xbox One and Xbox 360, coming this Fall

Forza Horizon 2 coverMicrosoft announced Forza Horizon 2, the sequel to the 2012 spin-off, and it will be coming to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 this year.  IGN broke the news this morning as part of their IGN First program, Horizon 2 will take place in Southern Europe, not the Deep South as was heavily rumored.  It will focus around a music festival, just as the first Horizon game did.  The game will be primarily developed by Playground Games, developer of the first Horizon, and will collaborate with Forza Motorsports developer Turn 10 Studios

“[Turn 10 and Playground] share this belief that we can create a true home for racing fans on Xbox One,” said Horizon 2 creative director Ralph Fulton.  Turn 10 and PlayGround are collaborating strongly with one another, with technology and key personal being shared between the studios.  For example, the title is being built on Turn 10’s Forza 5 engine, and Driveatars will be featured in Horizon 2.  The long awaited weather system will also make it’s Forza debut in Horizon 2.

The Xbox 360 version of Horizon 2 is being developed by Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed developer Sumo Digital, in collaboration with Turn 10.  Tomorrow IGN will have a full preview of from their extensive hands on time with the game, so be sure to give that a look.  Horizon 2 is almost assuredly going to be demoed at E3 2014, so keep it locked here for when any video surfaces.

New concept art suggests Forza Horizon sequel is heading to the Deep South

Forza deep south

A Forza Horizon sequel may been leaked today, as well as it’s new location.  IGN uncovered a few pieces of concept art from artist Sumeet Surve, who works at the India-based production company Dhurva Interactive, with the title Forza Deep South.  Dhurva Interatice previously assisted Turn 10 Studios and Playground Studios on Forza Motorsport 4 and Forza Horizon respectively.

Will the new game be titled Forza Deep South?  We do not know.  It’s possible that Deep South was just a working title, or title of the concept art.  One thing we do know is, this is not the first time we have heard of a sequel for Forza Horizon.  In January, a massive rumor dump happened on Neogaf, with a sequel to Horizon being one of the rumors.  These rumors have been corroborated to a point, with the leaked Titanfall Xbox One bundle being real, and The Verge confirming that Microsoft is testing other SKU’s of the Xbox One.  Halo actor Steve Downes also said Halo 2 Anniversary was coming this year, but later went back on the statement, saying he is just reading what everyone else has read.

Massive rumors for Xbox One include Halo 2 anniversary, Halo 5 delayed, Titanfall Xbox One bundle, and console without Blu-ray drive

I just want to preface everything I’m about to write with this: This is a rumor/leak from a Neogaf user who is currently unverified.  Kotaku has said it has verified with a very reliable source that this user is connected to Microsoft, though they were unable to verify any of the claims I’m about to write about.  Kotaku is also reporting that Microsoft is looking to track down and identify this user for potential legal action.  With all that said, let’s get down to the meat of it.

titanfall xbox one comboA massive rumor dump has appeared on Neogaf, thanks to user ntkrnl.  He has made a multitude of claims, so I’ll start with the biggest one to me: Halo 5 is delayed until 2015.  He is also claiming gamers will receive a Halo 2 Anniversary game on November 11th.  It will include multiplayer, run at 1080p, though 60 frames per second is iffy.  What kind of multiplayer is still unknown though.  If you look back at Halo Anniversary on Xbox 360, they merely ported many of the maps into Halo Reach.  It is reportedly being developed by Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity, and will feature two versions: a collector’s edition that comes with Halo 5 Beta access and the new Halo tv series, and a War Collection coming with all the previous and ports of Halo 3 and 4 for Xbox One.

Alongside this bomb came more on game’s release dates.  Fable Legends is scheduled for a Summer 2015, Quantum Break is scheduled for Holiday 2014, Sunset Overdrive is coming in October, and a (currently unannounced) sequel to Forza Horizon is coming in Fall (probably September).  He also confirmed that a Crackdown 3 is coming, though news on it this year is highly unlikely since it’s slated for a 2016 release.  Platinum Games is also apparently working on an Xbox One game currently called Project Nagano, and to look for it in 2016.  Gears of War will reportedly take about 2.5 years to make (think 2016 atleast).

On the hardware front, ntkrnl revealed that Microsoft is going to be releasing a white Xbox One later this year.  It seems like it will have Sunset Overdrive bundled with it as well as a “fancy” controller.  Microsoft is going to be releasing a Titanfall Xbox One bundle too, with a limited edition Xbox One (shown above).  Kotaku has been able to confirm with multiple sources that the bundle is indeed real, though that image may not be the final product.  Microsoft is reportedly going to have a limited edition console with 1TB of hard drive coming after the Sunset Overdrive Bundle and they a working an Xbox One with no disk drive.  The Verge confirms that Microsoft has been testing a console without the Blu-Ray drive.  An update for the Xbox One dashboard is apparently in the works, and will release in March.

These are massive leaks if they are true, and all around good news for Xbox One fans.  It looks like a ton of great games and new hardware versions are coming from the Redmond giant.  What do you think of the leak and the news involved?  Let me know in the comments below!

This reporter’s opinion:  OH MY GOD I WANT ALL OF THIS TO BE TRUE.  A Halo 2 Anniversary edition would be a mega sell for gamers, as long as the multiplayer remains the same.  If they just port the maps into Halo 4, then many would not care.  Even bigger news to me is that a port of Halo 3 and Halo 4 would be coming to the Xbox One.  I love Halo 3, and would love to see it in even shinier HD and on the next gen.  I can’t speak to how much I want a Titanfall bundle as well.  I’m looking to buy an Xbox One and this would be just perfect.  Crackdown 3 actually being made would be just plain amazing, same with a new Forza Horizon game.  I’m most curious though about what Project Nagano is.  Platinum Games is a fantastic developer, and I’d love to see them craft something for next-gen.  If Halo 5 is indeed delayed until 2015, then I’m betting it gets a September 2015 release date, and Gears of War 4(?) gets a release in fall of 2016.  If you can’t tell, I love speculation.  I really hope this is all real, though it’s very possible we are all just being taken for a ride.

Xbox 360 gets three Holiday bundles!

xbox 360 holiday bundleNot everyone will be buying the next generation consoles this Holiday.  Many are just getting into this current generation of consoles, and Microsoft is offering an all new slate of bundles for those who buy the Xbox 360 this Holiday, which were announced today by Major Nelson.

The first bundle (pictured right) will bundle the Xbox 360, a 250 GB hard drive, one month of Xbox Live Gold, a boxed copy of Halo 4 and a downloadable voucher for Tomb Raider all for $299.99.  The second bundle, seen here, will feature the Xbox 360, a 4GB hard drive, one month of Xbox Live Gold, Kinect, Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports season two.  This bundle will cost $299.99.  The third and final bundle, seen here, will include the Xbox 360, a 250GB hard drive, one month of Xbox Live gold, Kinect, Kinect Sports season two, Kinect Adventures, and Forza Horizon all for $399.99.

Each of these bundles will also be eligible for $50 off promotion many major US retailers are running from October 13th until Januaray 4th.  If you want to finally jump in on this generation consoles then this is the perfect time.  Though, if I was picking a bundle, I’d pick the Halo 4 bundle.
