Microsoft’s E3 press conference is over, and Microsoft brought out some big time guns for it. They opened the presser with Bonnie Ross of 343 Industries showing off Halo 5. In a four player co-op campaign demo, we saw Spartan Locke and his Fire-team Osiris hunting down the Master Chief in conjunction with The Arbiter’s Sangheili forces. It showcased the new commands that Locke can issue to his squad mates, as well as the new Promethean enemies. Next, Josh Holmes announced the new multiplayer game-mode for Halo 5: Warzone. This is 24 players and can be PvP or PvE fighting against enemies like Hunters, Grunts and Prometheans. Holmes promised these maps would be larger than anything ever seen in Halo. Halo 5: Guardians comes to Xbox One October 27th.
Next, Microsoft revealed a brand new IP coming from Keiji Inafune, famous for Mega Man, as well as some of the team behind the Metroid Prime Trilogy, who now work at both Armature Studios and Comcept. It follows a girl and her Robot, who’s conscious can be transferred to any robot in the landscape. It is called Recore, and is coming Xbox One exclusively in Spring 2016.
Phil Spencer took the stage next, and dropped two big bombs: a brand new Xbox One controller with “featuring an arsenal of swappable components, Hair Trigger Locks, and limitless customization.” It’s called the Xbox Elite controller and presumably is coming this Fall. He then revealed that Xbox One would be getting backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 coming this Holiday. They didn’t reveal if it was all games, but it seems like it’s the majority of the Xbox 360 games.
Todd Howard of Bethesda took the stage next, and showed off some new and some old footage from Fallout 4. We got a larger and extended combat sequence with the player taking control of some power armor and fighting a Deathclaw that clawed it’s way out of the sewer. Howard also revealed that PC mods would be usable on Xbox One exclusively. Fallout 4 comes to consoles and PC 11-10-15
Peter Moore of EA took the stage next to tout EA Access and announced that Titanfall would be joining the service today, and Dragon Age Inquisition would join later this summer. Moore revealed that EA access would be free this week, so gamers can try the service for free. Finally, Moore announced Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will be coming in Spring 2016.
Turn 10 Studios took the stage next, and revealed that Forza Motorsports 6 would be coming to Xbox One September 15th. It will feature new cars, new tracks and weather effects that look phenomenal.
Next up, we got the reveal of Dark Souls 3. No gameplay was shown, but we did get a Spring 2016 release date. It is assumed the game will be coming to PS4 as well. We also got a brand new look at The Division, and honestly it looks like the graphics took a bit of a downgrade. It still looks good, just not spectacular like we saw before. Ubisoft also announced all copies of Rainbow Six Siege would come with copies of Rainbow Six Vegas and Vegas 2 on Xbox One.
We next got a look at Microsoft’s upcoming MOBA-esc battler Gigantic, which will have a beta beginning in August. ID @ Xbox took the stage next and gave us a closer look at four major ID@Xbox console exclusives: Cuphead, Tacoma from Fullbright Studios, Ashen, and Beyond Eyes which is a game where you explore the world as a blind girl. Xbox One will also be getting early access, with games like Long Dark, Day Z and Elite Dangerous all apart of the program this year. Dean Hall, the creator of Day Z, also revealed his new game called ION. It’s “an emergent narrative massively-multiplayer online game in which players will build, live in and inevitably die in huge floating galactic constructions as humanity makes its first steps colonizing the universe.” Coming first to Xbox One and PC.
Crystal Dynamics took the stage to showcase their Holiday Xbox exclusive: Rise of the Tomb Raider. In our first ever look at gameplay, we saw Lara climbing in an arctic environment, and later saw Lara exploring massively diverse environment. It looks beautiful, and will launch on Xbox One on 11-10-15
Rare took the stage next to announce a massive collection of Rare games will be coming to Xbox One. Called the Rare Rewind, players will get 30 Rare games for $30. This collection includes Banjo-Kazooie, Battletoads, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark, and more. Rare also announced a brand new IP called Sea of Thieves. The massive multiplayer game lets players be pirates, including controlling your own ships, hunting for treasure and battling other pirates. No release date or window revealed though.
Next, Microsoft announced Fable Legends will be going free-to-play, and launches this Holiday. It will feature cross-play with Windows 10 and Xbox. We also got a major demo of Microsoft’s Hololens technology in Minecraft and it looked magical. The real question, posed by Gametrailers’ Ian Hinck was “But will it be fun?” It looks astounding, but I too worry about if it’ll be actually fun. No release date was revealed, but expect to hear more soon.
The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson took the stage to reveal the latest in the Gears of War franchise. First up, he announced we would be getting a remake of Gears of War 1 called Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It launches on August 25th, and a one week beta for the public starts today on Xbox One and runs for one week. Lastly, we got a major demo from Gears of War 4, the next game in the Gears franchise. It looks phenomenally gorgeous and introduced two new characters and one completely different almost beetle-esc enemy. Gears of War 4 is coming Holiday 2016.
And that was it. Microsoft put on a massive show to open the Monday of pressers. What was your favorite moment? What do the other companies have to do to beat Microsoft? Let me know in the comments below!
