Nintendo’s E3 Smash tournament competitors, announcers, rules and playable characters revealed

Today, Nintendo announced the specifics of it’s E3 Smash Bros Invitational.  We finally learned the sixteen competitors fighting as well.  They are as follows:Milktea, Hugs, Ken, LiquidKDJ, Lilo, DJNintendo, Toph, PeachyHime, HBox, PewPewU, PPMD, TheRapture, AMSA, MacD, CT Zero, and Crismas.  Notabley absent from the invited players list are competitive mainstays Mew2King, Mango, and Armada, who were ranked as the top three competitive smash players in the world in 2013.

On commentary for the tournament, we will see PROG, D1, and SCAR.  These three have been commentating on Smash for years on the competitive circuit, and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the matches.  Our host for the evening will be Gametrailers TV and VGX host Geoff Keighley.  The playable characters will be Little Mac, Zero Suit Samus, Bowser, Wii Fit Trainer, Marth, Mega Man, Pit, Villager, Pikachu, Mario, Kirby, Link, Samus, Sonic, Donkey Kong, Rosalina & Luma, Greninja, Fox, Zelda, and Olimar.

Each competitor will select one character to be played through the entire tournament, via a special draft at the beginning.  The tournament will be single elimination, with the first three rounds being four players, four stock, and five minute matches, with items on.  The top two players will advance to the next round.  The Grand Final will be a one on one match, items off, fought on Battlefield.  This tournament will take place on June 10th at 4pm pacific time during E3.

    Clearly very much catering to the Melee community with the event. I am curious how much the game caters to that community as well, or if they are just trying to really hit it home with the advertising.
