Just over a year after it’s release, SimCity now has an offline mode. Released today, the offline mode allows players to play SimCity without being connected to the internet. This will allow gamers to mod their game as well, without those mods being approved by Maxis. Players can still play in the game’s original connected online mode as well.
“We’ve listened to our players and today we are delivering against their most direct feedback with the release of the new Single-Player Mode,” said Patrick Buechner, GM of Maxis Emeryville in a press statement to Forbes. “Player feedback has helped us deliver 10 major gameplay Updates that have improved the experience with better tuning, new features and free content. This is the most definitive SimCity experience whether you choose to play Online or Offline.”
This change comes over a long period of time where Maxis claimed SimCity needed an online connection. Maxis defended the decision to go online only even before launch, claiming the amount of calculations the servers did was what caused the game to go online only. SimCity launched to high sales, but an awful launch. Millions of gamers had saved deleted, lost progress and found themselves unable to play due to the servers being overloaded. You can boot up SimCity now to dowload the free update, and play the game how you want to play it.
