Kotaku is reporting that Popcap Games has been hit with layoffs. One source tells Kotaku that the number of employees laid off is between 30-40. but EA has not confirmed the number. Popcap’s General Manager and co-founder John Vechey sent the following statement to Kotaku regarding the layoffs.
“The changes we made today at PopCap were painful and we’re sorry to lose some of our friends and colleagues. But it was also necessary in order to stay on course with our future plans for mobile games, live services, and new IP. PopCap is a studio that made its name building great games that the world can fall in love with, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
The cause of the layoffs is unknown. One could speculate that either some of PopCap’s game did not sell well enough, or the studio is downsizing to focus fewer projects. PopCap recently released Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare for the Xbox One and Xbox 360, Peggle 2 for Xbox One last fall, and Plants vs Zombie 2 for mobile late last summer.
