Super Smash Bros Melee returns to both Evo and the MLG Pro Circuit

Super Smash Bros Melee is returning to the MLG Por Circuit for the first time in seven years.  On top of that, EVO, the annual fighting game tournament, has announced that Melee will return for EVO 2014, marking the second year in a row that it will be played.  Nintendo gave approval for both of these events, and released the following statement to James ‘Obscurica’ Chen of OnGamers:

“Nintendo is happy to work with both Evo and Major League Gaming to help make their tournaments come to life using the game, and we hope it helps make their events enjoyable for video game fans everywhere. Nintendo will be releasing a new Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS this year.”

As you may know, Melee’s inclusion at EVO 2013 was due to a fan donation drive.  It was initially stopped by Nintendo, but the backlash caused the company to change it’s mind near immediately.  MLG’s Vice President Adam Apicella spoke with OnGamers about the announcement as well.  “We are extremely excited to welcome Super Smash Bros. Melee back to the Pro Circuit”, Apicella told onGamers. “We have been working closely with Nintendo since last year in order to showcase the game and we’re thrilled to finally share the good news. We hope this leads to continued and deeper collaboration with Nintendo in the future.”  He continued, saying that they have not received permission to run Super Smash Bros Brawl yet.

MLG will run Melee at MLG Anaheim, taking place on June 20-22nd.  It will be played alongside Call of Duty Ghosts, DOTA 2, and Starcraft 2.  EVO 2014 will take place in Las Vegas on July 11th thru the 13th.  Street Fighter IV Ultra, Injustice: God’s Among Us, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, King of Fighter’s XIII, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, and Killer Instinct will all be played alongside Smash Bros.
