Valve has announced that the first version of the SteamOS will be released into the wild that is the internet this Friday.  This release will coincide with the release of the 300 Beta testers Steam Machines and controllers.  Beta testers of the new Machines will also receive a special badge on their Steam accounts, letting all the world know of their glory.

Vale is not recommending that the average consumer download the SteamOS this Friday though.  In the announcement, Valve wrote “But unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out”.  Although I’m not familiar with Linux, I’ve heard it takes a bit of work to get running, and operating properly, and since the SteamOS is built on a Linux architecture, it too may be hard to use at first.  The Steam Controller won’t be available for the public until sometime in 2014 as well, so why risk hurting your current rig, unless you know what you are doing?
