The Xbox One and PS4 both had massive launches in the UK in the past few weeks. The Xbox One sold 170,000 units in just one week, and the PS4 sold a massive 250,000 units over it’s first week, and is also the fastest selling console in UK history.
These new consoles have officially sold more units then the Wii U has in it’s one year life span in the UK, according to an industry source speaking to Eurogamer. According to that insider, the Wii U has sold 150,000 units over it’s year of release in the UK. Those numbers are quite shocking, though not unexpected. The Wii U has certainly had a botched launch, with lack of games and confusion over what it really is. Though things are looking up for the console with the launch of Super Mario 3D World and games like Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 on the horizon.
This reporter’s opinion: These numbers are concerning, although not unexpected. I’m happy to hear how well the PS4 and Xbox One are selling, but I’m not overly worried about the Wii U. To me, and remember I’m no expert, the Wii U is in a similar situation as the 3DS just a few years ago. Analysts like Michael Pachter were proclaiming the death of handheld games not on mobile devices, and look at it now. The 3DS sold over 425,000 units in October. Once major titles like Smash Bros, Zelda, and Mario Kart launch for the Wii U it will sell well. Games sell hardware, plain and simple, and the Wii U lacks a reason buy it. The Xbox One and PS4 have massive games like Battlefield 4, COD, Ryse and Killzone.
