Today, Ubisoft released a blog post announcing that the much anticipated Watch Dogs would be delayed until Spring 2014. IGN is reporting that the title will not be released until April 2014, as they do not intend to release the game during the current fiscal year. This news comes just 30 days before it’s original release date on the PS4, where it was expected to be one of the pillars of the next generation of consoles launch lineups.
“We know a lot of you are probably wondering: Why now? We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.” wrote communications manager Gary Steinman in the blog.
Many gamers have also pre-ordered the next-gen consoles in bundles with Watch Dogs, and this cancellation certainly puts those pre-orders in a state of limbo. Speaking with Kotaku, Ubisoft didn’t really have answer as to what those gamers fates are. If you pre-ordered an Xbox One or PS4 through retailers like Amazon or Gamestop with the Watch Dogs bundle, I advise you contact them as soon as possible.
This reporter’s opinion: This is quite unfortunate. I had all intentions to pick up Watch Dogs at launch as it really felt like the banner carrier for the next generation of games. I feel quite bad for anyone who did pre-order a bundle with the title though, as this could create a sticky situation. Now it looks like I’ll be picking up Killzone and another title. What ones do you guys recommend? I’m leaning toward Battlefield, but Knack may satisfy that adventure game itch for me. Let me know in the comments.
