The Xbox 360 and PS3 slim both worked standing vertically, and the PS4 will also work standing vertically. It looks like the Xbox One cannot follow this trend. In an interview with Gamespot UK, Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, said to only place your Xbox One vertically “at your own risk”.
Panello explained that the issue is with the Xbox One slot loading drive, not its cooling. “It wouldn’t be a cooling problem, we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both”. He added that 80% of Xbox 360 users place their console horizontal (Author’s note: How they determined that is beyond me). In contrast, the PS4 can be set vertically or horizontally.
Xbox One launches worldwide on November 22nd.
