Mega Man’s creator, Keiji Inafune, has launched a Kickstarter for his latest game Mighty No. 9. This title will feature a very Mega Man like character named Beck. Beck is the ninth in the series of Mighty Robots, and the previous eight have gone rouge. Beck will have to stop these eight enemies and adapt to using their weapons after defeating each. The gameplay is sidescrolling action, with platforming elements. If this concept sounds familiar, it’s because this seems like a Mega Man game in everything but it’s name.
The Kickstarter will have 30 days to reach it’s $900,000 goal, and is already off to an amazing start, with over $280,000 of funds gathered at the time of my writing. If the $900,000 is met, then they will move onto stretch goals. If they get over 1.35 million, the team will develop a Mac/Linux version, and if they recieve over 2.5 million they will develop for the Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360.
The team working on Mighty No. 9 is an all star cast, with Keiji Inafune, Naoya Tomita (level designer on the Original Mega Man), Kimo Kimo (creator of characters for Street Fighter Alpha & Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap) and music by Manami Matsumae (creator of the original Mega Man’s soundtrack and it’s sound effects), just to name a few. They have also already released the main theme for the game, listen for yourself right here.
If you would like to support this game, head over to Mighty No. 9’s Kickstarter now. If the Kickstarter is successful, expect the title on Steam and other DRM free distribution methods in Spring of 2015.
This reporter’s opinion: This game really seems like a straight up Mega Man game, and I am perfectly ok with that. Capcom has neglected the franchise in recent years, and I have been really looking for a new game like it, and it seems like Mighty No. 9 will fill that void. I’ll likely be funding this one in the next few days.
