Gamers on the official Naughty Dogs forums had noticed an odd difference between the US version and the European versions of The Last of Us. They noted changes between executions in each version’s multiplayer. Thankfully, Naughty Dog gave clarity on the situation.
It seems that the censorship was just a blanket measure done by Naughty Dog to work with the countries with the highest amount of violent censorship. Reddit seems to believe that Germany’s refusal to adopt the PEGI system of game ratings (think of PEGI as Europe’s ESRP). The Last of Us is still one of the best games of the year. I highly recommend you take a look at it, as it proves why Naughty Dog is one of the best developers of this console generation. Take a look at my review.
This reporter’s opinion: The censorship that is done on the Europe version is not that severe. It could be said that the American version gives more satisfying kills, but I don’t think that small amount of censorship really detracts from the game. That’s just my opinion though, and it could easily be argued that by buying a game meant for adults, a certain amount of violence should be assumed.
